Dr. Michael Barra earned a BS degree from Cornell University and then went on to receive a DVM degree from Cornell University in 1973. He is a 40-year member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS) and the Hudson Valley Veterinary Medical Society.
Dr. Barra has taken many post-graduate courses, seminars and labs in a variety of disciplines including orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery endoscopy, dentistry, laser surgery, ultrasound and internal medicine and holistic medicine. His main area of interest in veterinary medicine is advanced orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures, which he perform routinely at our hospital.
He is certified and equipped to perform Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) and Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture, which is the most common knee injury we see. The TTA procedure is now the gold standard for treating this injury using titanium implants to change the physics of the knee joint. Other orthopedic surgeries include plating and pinning of bone fractures and patellar luxation repair.
For soft tissue surgeries, Dr. Barra performs soft palate resection, laryngeal tie-back, biliary diversion, stomach, intestinal, liver, splenic, ear, eye, dental extractions, thyroidectomies, mass/tumor excisions, perineal urethrostomies, urinary, bladder, prostate and also laser surgery, radiosurgery and cryosurgery. All surgical procedures are done to also attain the best cosmetic appearance for your pet, using special suturing techniques.
Dr. Barra's goal is to provide the highest quality comprehensive medical and surgical care for your pet, a safe and healthy boarding and grooming facility, quality pet foods, nutritional supplements and supplies, all at a reasonable price. He is proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable staff of animal lovers, many of whom have been with us for many years. He is also proud of the certification of our hospital by American Animal Hospital Association since 1986, which requires keeping up with rigorous standards and inspections regularly.
Dr. Barra has been a member of the Middletown Kiwanis Club for 36 years and is a past president. He is a past Lt. Governor of the Hudson River West Division of Kiwanis. An active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Middletown for more than 36 years, Dr. Barra enjoys sailing on the Hudson, kayaking, karaoke, watching movies, piano and harmonica playing and reading. He especially enjoys spending time with his three children and four grandchildren, and keeping his three dogs, cat and cockatiel happy.
