In 1970, Bruce attended De Witt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York. One of his science classes was Animal Care. Bruce completed his two-year internship at the Bronx Zoo, working at the Aquatic Bird House and the Small Animal House. He was part of the medical research team at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital working with small animals.
Upon graduating from high school, Bruce accepted a position at the Bronx Veterans Affair Medical Center as an animal caretaker in the research facility. In 1981, he became a biological technician, performing surgery on research animals and conducting various animal studies. Bruce supervised the day-to-day operations in the animal facility with nine employees. He has also worked in the Intensive Care Unit as a blood gas technician, the Cardiac Care Unit as a technician and in the Operating Room as a perfusionist.
Bruce retired in June 2009 with 35 years of service. He joined Ani-Mall Pet Hospital in October 2006 part-time, and he truly enjoys working here becaus "the people are great." Bruce has much compassion for the animals when they come in ill or are in discomfort. At home, he has a dog named Zena. She is a three-year-old Rottweiler and the family loves her.
